Spotify has launched a new desktop application called Studio by Spotify Labs that generates personalized AI podcasts on any topic, directly competing with Google's NotebookLM. The app allows users to create audio content by simply asking the system to research a subject and deliver it in podcast format. Spotify is also rolling out personal context features, meaning the tool can access a user's emails, calendar, and other personal information to generate tailored content.
The Studio app includes an AI agent capable of browsing the web and pulling personal data to create customized daily briefings. For example, users can ask for a road trip Italy podcast that walks through their daily calendar and reservations, recommends dinner spots near their location, and suggests music for the drive—all generated as a single audio episode. These AI-created podcasts are automatically saved to the user's Spotify library and sync across devices, though they remain private and are not publicly available. Spotify has cautioned that the app is an early research preview and the AI may produce unreliable or inaccurate content.
The launch expands Spotify's reach beyond its original command-line tool, which was designed for developers using coding assistants like Claude Code or Codex. That earlier offering allowed technical users to create personal podcasts from data, but the new Studio app makes the functionality accessible to non-coders. Spotify is releasing the app in research preview to users aged 18 and older across more than 20 markets. The move positions Spotify to compete more aggressively in the AI-powered audio space, where NotebookLM popularized podcast generation from source material years ago.
