Meta is working on an AI-powered wearable device that users can wear as a pendant, according to an internal memo reviewed by The Information. The company plans to begin testing the device within the next year. This project builds on Meta's acquisition of Limitless, an AI device startup purchased at the end of 2025. Limitless had developed an AI pendant that clipped onto clothing or could be worn as a necklace to record conversations, and Meta has stated the acquisition would help accelerate its work on "AI-enabled wearables."
The timing is notable given the track record of AI wearables. Previous attempts by various companies to bring AI-powered accessories to market have largely failed to gain consumer traction, often due to privacy concerns and questionable marketing strategies. Despite these challenges, major tech companies including OpenAI continue investing in the category, suggesting they believe the market potential outweighs the risks.
Beyond the pendant, Meta's hardware ambitions include expanding its lineup of AI glasses and introducing a new business-focused subscription tier called "Wearables for Work." These initiatives appear designed to reinvigorate the company's Reality Labs division, which reported losses of $4 billion in the first quarter of 2026. The push into AI wearables represents a significant bet that consumer and enterprise demand for hands-free AI assistance could eventually offset those losses and turn hardware into a profitable venture for the company.
