Anthropic has launched Claude Fable 5, the first publicly available iteration of its long-rumored Mythos model, and early testers say it represents a significant leap in AI capability. University of Pennsylvania professor and AI researcher Ethan Mollick has been putting the system through its paces, and his verdict, posted Tuesday on his Substack, was effusive. Fable "outperformed basically every other public model I have used by a considerable margin," he wrote, noting that the model could execute complex tasks for up to 12 hours based on multi-page specifications. That's a level of sustained, autonomous work that few competing systems have demonstrated.
The most eye-catching demonstrations came in the form of video games Mollick generated using only a single initial prompt in Claude Code. The lineup includes Snake, a retro-style game where players control a never-stopping serpent consuming apples across an arcade-style screen. More ambitious is Strata, an exploration game set in an endless network of underground tunnels where the objective is to light lanterns — graphics that resemble a degraded version of the classic 1990s adventure game Myst, but impressive given they emerged from one prompt. The most literary entry is Duino, a moody walking simulator inspired by Rainer Maria Rilke's famous Duino Elegies, in which a solitary figure traverses a nighttime landscape while passages from the poems appear on screen.
Beyond games, Mollick also used Fable to generate a detailed isochronic map — a visualization that displays how long it takes to travel between any two given locations — and called the accuracy and level of detail "arresting." Taken together, the experiments point to a shifting reality for software development: projects that once demanded teams of engineers, artists, and designers, from playable games to sophisticated mapping tools, are now emerging from a single written prompt. For the growing "vibe coding" community, Fable 5 looks like another major step toward making the one-person software studio a real possibility.
