New York Governor Kathy Hochul is using AI to analyze "every single rule, regulation, [and] policy" in the state to identify outdated legislation. During an interview with Bloomberg's Odd Lots podcast, Hochul noted that reviewing all state laws would have taken "five years at the staff level," but her team completed the analysis in "a couple of months."

Examples of antiquated laws Hochul cited include a $25 fee required to take a dog hunting and a stipulation requiring pregnant people to obtain a permit to work after midnight. She said the AI analysis will allow her and state agencies to "get rid of" these outdated regulations.

Earlier this week, New York became the first state to implement a moratorium on new hyperscale data centers for up to a year while lawmakers develop regulations to protect residents from rising utility costs and threats to natural resources. Despite this pause, Hochul said she believes AI can help government be "on your side" rather than "on your back."
