Writer has launched Palmyra X6, a new flagship AI model built as a post-training variation on Z.ai's open source model GLM-5.2. The company says the system provides deployment-ready capabilities at significantly lower per-token costs, and estimates the new model combined with changes to its harness infrastructure will cut costs for customers by as much as 50% for basic tasks.
Alongside Palmyra X6, Writer released significant upgrades to its standard agentic harness. Research from Writer found that changes in harness efficiency were often more reliable for reducing costs than model choice, with costs falling an average of 40% across their testing. "The harness is the one component whose efficiency multiplies across every model an organization runs," the researchers wrote.
CEO May Habib told TechCrunch that enterprises are "sick of chasing the next benchmark" and want flattening costs. She added that AI labs "don't deeply understand how to help an enterprise get benefit from AI." Palmyra X6 will be available alongside other Writer models or outside models imported through Azure or Amazon Bedrock, with both features rolling out to clients starting Thursday.
