Stripe CEO Patrick Collison, whose company is acquiring OpenRouter, described Ox Alpha as "very impressive" on X. Much of the speculation about the model's origin has centered on China, with early theories pointing to GLM models from the Chinese company Z.ai, though observers note that certainty has since declined.
Wccftech initially reported evidence suggesting a connection to GLM, but later updated its coverage to propose that Ox Alpha could instead be an unreleased version of Microsoft's MAI. Reddit discussions show conflicting opinions, with some posts asserting the model "can't be the Chinese" while others express high confidence in a Chinese origin.
