The proposal requires recordings to be "substantially human made" and comply with several conditions, including respecting the terms of service of AI services used, ensuring models have rights to their training data, and not raising stream or chart manipulation concerns.
This proposal goes further than a labeling framework put forth by the RIAA, International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), SAG-AFTRA, and others, which focused on standardized AI labeling. The labels' proposal would also require clear AI disclosure to consumers on downstream platforms like digital streaming services.
The IFPI has supported the proposal, though no charting organization has indicated any immediate plan to adopt the rules. Questions remain about what constitutes "substantially human made" and what counts as chart manipulation concerns, with the major labels not immediately responding to requests for clarification.
