Google's AI Overviews feature is experiencing a peculiar bug that's causing it to misinterpret certain search queries. When users search for action words like "disregard," "ignore," or "skip," the AI doesn't provide typical summaries. Instead, it responds as if acknowledging those commands literally, with messages like "Got it. If you need anything else or have a new question later, just let me know!" or "It looks like your message was just a test or typo!"

The issue appears to stem from the AI mistaking search queries for direct commands. When one Verge reporter searched for "ignore," they received: "Message received! I'm here and ready to help. What would you like to focus on today?" Similarly, searching "skip" prompted the response: "Feel free to ask a question, share a prompt, or let me know how I can help you with your tasks today."

Google acknowledged the problem in a statement to Android Authority, saying it is aware that AI Overviews are misinterpreting some action-related queries. The company confirmed it is working on a fix that will roll out soon. As of Friday afternoon, some of these problematic responses were still appearing in searches for "ignore" and "skip."

By Friday afternoon, searching "disregard" no longer produced an AI Overview at all—instead displaying a list of news stories about the issue. Google has not responded to The Verge's requests for additional comment. While the situation is amusing, it appears to be a straightforward software bug rather than any intentional behavior.
