Firefox's Smart Window AI browsing mode now pulls from current web information and displays source links in chat responses through a partnership with search engine Exa. The feature can automatically suggest tab groups and show visual previews of previously visited pages when searching browsing history using natural language, sorting through what users have already seen rather than primarily presenting new search results.

The update is designed to help users find information they remember seeing but can't recall the specific page for, by adding citations to content pulled from Exa. Mozilla reports that beta users found this approach helped them maintain their train of thought better than traditional AI search features.

Smart Window remains an opt-in beta feature with no specific timeline for exiting beta status. Mozilla has also added an AI Controls section to Firefox settings allowing users to enable or disable individual AI features. Users can choose which AI model to use within Smart Window, and future updates are planned to include Chrome-like surfacing of recent browsing journeys and AI-powered autofill for online forms.
