Cursor, the AI startup now officially part of SpaceX, has launched Origin—a new code-hosting platform designed to handle collaborative coding, repository management, and pull-requests. The platform is interoperable with GitHub, allowing developers to sync their existing GitHub repos alongside Cursor-hosted ones without abandoning their current workflow.
The launch coincides with ongoing frustration over GitHub's service reliability. On the same day Origin launched, GitHub suffered a worldwide outage lasting over six hours with a nearly 20% error rate. According to a recent analysis by LeadDev, GitHub experienced 257 outages over the past year, contributing to a "visible exodus of high-profile users."
Cursor has indicated that "agent native" features are coming soon to Origin, along with a wider "app ecosystem" to support broader coding efforts. However, displacing GitHub won't be easy—GitHub reports approximately 180 million developers using its platform as of last October and remains the largest source-code host in the world since its founding in 2007 and acquisition by Microsoft in 2012.
