Pangram has raised $9 million in seed funding led by Menlo Ventures, with participation from Haystack, ScOp, Script Capital, and Cadenza. The startup also announced its next-generation AI text detection model, Pangram 4, which the company claims is over 99% accurate at identifying AI-assisted writing and mixed human-AI content, plus it can detect AI humanizer programs. An AI image detection model called Pangram Image is currently available only via research preview with wider release planned for coming weeks.
Founded about two years ago by Stanford AI and machine learning graduates Max Spero and Bradley Emi after ChatGPT's launch, Pangram built its detection system by training a large machine learning model on tens of millions of known human documents and creating synthetic mirrors replicating each document's topic, length, and tone—but written by frontier LLMs. The system learns stylistic differences and consistent AI choices rather than relying on copy-paste metadata or hidden watermarks.
Spero told TechCrunch that distinguishing AI-generated content matters because it changes how readers approach text—whether to be skeptical of potential hallucinations or trust it came from a real journalist. He emphasized that Pangram's system also distinguishes between levels of AI assistance, and that AI use can be acceptable if disclosed. The funding comes as AI usage controversies have led to embarrassment and sanctions, including lawyers facing consequences for using fake ChatGPT citations.
