Google unveiled Gmail Live, a new conversational AI feature for its email platform, during the company's I/O 2026 developer conference. The Gemini-powered tool allows users to interact with their inbox using natural language instead of traditional keyword searches. Devanshi Bhandari, Gmail's product lead, demonstrated the feature to reporters ahead of the announcement, showing how users can simply ask questions aloud about information buried in their emails. The feature is designed to answer follow-up questions, pivot between topics, and handle interruptions naturally. The tool addresses a common frustration with email management. Users often struggle to locate specific information like flight details, dental appointment times, rental property door codes, or school event information when messages get lost among thousands of emails. Rather than typing search terms or email addresses into a search box, users can now verbally query Gmail about specific needs and receive direct answers. The AI demonstrates contextual understanding, distinguishing between similar terms like "field trip" and "trip" while maintaining conversation flow. During the demonstration, Bhandari asked Gmail Live questions about a child's show-and-tell assignment, class trip logistics, and travel details for an upcoming Detroit visit, including hotel and flight information. The feature responds similarly to standalone AI chatbots, but draws exclusively from the user's email data to provide personalized answers. This practical application represents Google's effort to showcase tangible AI benefits at a time when the technology faces skepticism from communities concerned about data center expansion and rising energy costs.
