Google's AI Overview feature is making elementary spelling mistakes that have become the subject of ridicule online. The artificial intelligence incorrectly stated there are two P's in "Google" (there are actually three), claimed the word "journalism" contains two D's, and spelled "Trump" as "trpum." The feature also bizarrely answered "exactly 1 'r' in the word 'poop'" when asked a simple question. These errors stem from a fundamental limitation in how large language models process text. These AI systems, which can write code and solve complex mathematical problems, struggle with what should be basic tasks like counting letters within words. This weakness isn't new to Google—it's a well-known quirk across the AI industry. Whenever companies release new AI models, users inevitably test them by asking how many letters appear in "strawberry," and the results are consistently wrong. This isn't Google's first stumble with AI Overviews. The company previously had to fix the feature after it recommended humans eat rocks and apply glue to pizza, citing satirical sources like The Onion and Reddit posts. Google is now doubling down on integrating generative AI into its 29-year-old search engine, but the spelling issues have proven difficult to eliminate. Google acknowledged the problem in a statement to TechCrunch: "Counting within words has been a known challenge for LLMs, and we're working to fix this particular issue." The company also patched a separate bug last week where searching "disregard" produced a confusing response that looked like a dictionary definition but actually said "Understood. Let me know whenever you have a new prompt or question!"
