Spotify launches an ElevenLabs-powered audiobook creation tool

Spotify unveiled a new AI-powered audiobook creation tool at its Investor Day event, developed in partnership with voice AI company ElevenLabs. The feature, designed for self-publishing audiobooks within the Spotify for Authors platform, will launch in beta this June on an invite-only basis, supporting English language content initially. Notably, the tool will not require authors to sign exclusive contracts, allowing them to distribute their AI-generated audiobooks across other platforms. The move builds on an existing partnership where writers could submit ElevenLabs-created audiobooks to Spotify, though the company appears to have sought access to ElevenLabs' newer, more expressive voice models. The streaming giant is also significantly expanding its language support for authors, adding ten new languages to Spotify for Authors including French, Canadian French, German, Dutch, Latin American Spanish, Swedish, Finnish, Icelandic, Danish, and Norwegian. Additionally, Spotify announced plans to enhance its Audiobook+ subscription tier with higher listening limits and new pricing options for students and families, though specific details remain undisclosed. The platform reported over one million Audiobook+ subscriptions and expects to reach $100 million in annualized recurring revenue from the segment. Spotify revealed several new features to improve audiobook discovery and engagement. Users will soon be able to ask questions using natural language to find audiobooks, and the company is extending its prompt-based playlist creation tool—previously available for podcasts and music—to include audiobooks this summer. These additions are part of a broader push into audiobooks, which has seen the platform grow its catalog to 700,000 titles and increase listening hours by 60% year-over-year. The company has been aggressively expanding its audiobook ecosystem through various initiatives, including bringing the program to international markets, investing in non-English content, enabling in-app purchases, and launching dedicated audiobook charts. Earlier this year, Spotify also introduced a program allowing authors to sell physical books in the U.S. and U.K. ElevenLabs, for its part, launched its own self-publishing platform for authors in 2025, further positioning itself in the audiobook market.
