OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman takes charge of product strategy

Greg Brockman, OpenAI's co-founder and president, is now officially leading the company's product strategy, according to a Wired report. This move formalizes an existing arrangement where Brockman has been overseeing OpenAI's products on an interim basis while Fidji Simo, the company's CEO of AGI deployment, remains on medical leave. In an internal staff memo, Brockman outlined plans to merge ChatGPT with its programming tool Codex into a single unified experience. "We're consolidating our product efforts to execute with maximum focus toward the agentic future, to win across both consumer and enterprise," Brockman stated in the memo. OpenAI confirmed to TechCrunch that Simo, despite being on medical leave, collaborated with Brockman on these strategic changes. The company also noted it has been discussing plans to unify ChatGPT, Codex, and its API under one platform with a consolidated product team. The leadership shift comes after CEO Sam Altman declared a "code red" late last year, emphasizing the need to refocus on the core ChatGPT experience. Since then, OpenAI has abandoned several side projects, including the video generator Sora and the OpenAI for Science initiative, signaling a strategic pivot toward the company's primary offerings.
