Notion is expanding beyond its roots as a collaborative note-taking tool by launching a new developer platform that transforms its workspace into a central hub for AI agents. During a live-streamed event on Wednesday, the company unveiled capabilities that allow teams to create custom AI agents, connect with external agents, and build automated multi-step workflows that pull data from any database. By introducing an orchestration layer that coordinates AI work across multiple tools and data sources, Notion is positioning itself as more than a productivity app with AI features bolted on—it's now a hub where humans and AI agents can collaborate across different systems. The company first launched Custom Agents in February, AI teammates designed to handle repetitive tasks such as answering FAQs, compiling status updates, and automating workflows. Since then, Notion customers have created over one million agents. However, these agents had significant limitations—they couldn't connect to external data sources or use custom logic. External agents that companies were already using also had no way to interface with the Notion workspace. This forced teams to rely on third-party automation platforms or build their own scripts running on separate infrastructure. Notion co-founder and CEO Ivan Zhao acknowledged during the livestream that "historically, Notion hasn't been the most developer-focused platform," but emphasized that "things are changing." The new platform includes Workers, a cloud-based environment where customers can write custom code and deploy it to secure sandboxes—isolated environments that prevent code from interfering with other systems. Teams can now sync data into Notion, build custom tools, and trigger actions with webhooks without needing external infrastructure. Interestingly, users don't even have to write the code themselves; their preferred AI coding assistant can do it. Workers will use Notion's existing credit system, but the company is offering free access through August so developers can experiment with the new capabilities.
