Google unveiled AI agents at its I/O 2026 keynote that operate continuously in the background, monitoring topics users specify rather than waiting for manual searches. The new agentic capabilities let users create, customize, and manage multiple AI agents to track interests ranging from stock prices to flight deals. Unlike traditional search tools, these agents synthesize information across sources, explain significance, compare perspectives, and deliver actionable insights without users having to repeatedly check for updates. The system builds on Google Alerts, the notification service launched in 2003, but with substantially more functionality. Users can track specific companies, economic trends, breaking news, housing or job market data, sports teams, and weather conditions. A stock market-focused agent, for example, would monitor activity throughout the day, summarize earnings reports, alert users to major movements, and provide contextual summaries with relevant links. To access the feature, users open AI Mode in Search and enter a prompt such as "Keep me updated on nearby movie tickets for 'The Mandalorian and Grogu.'" When relevant information surfaces, the Google app sends a push notification. Active tracked topics appear in AI Mode history where users can manage, refine, or disable alerts. The feature launches this summer, initially rolling out to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the United States before expanding to additional markets. The announcement coincided with Google's most significant Search redesign in over 25 years, featuring a reimagined "intelligent search box" designed for longer, conversational queries.
