Apple finally delivered on its long-promised AI Siri overhaul at WWDC 2026 on Monday, two years after the company first announced a smarter version of its voice assistant and failed to ship it. The new "Siri AI" represents a fundamental reimagining of the product, transforming it from a simple voice-controlled helper into a full conversational AI chatbot designed to compete directly with ChatGPT, Claude, and Google's Gemini. The assistant will launch alongside a dedicated Siri app, marking Apple's most aggressive push yet into the generative AI space. The updated Siri can now draw on current world knowledge to ground its responses, access information stored on a user's device, and react to what's currently displayed on their screen. When users ask questions, the assistant will display text cards containing results pulled from the web, text messages, and other sources. Apple has also redesigned Siri for modern iPhones, relocating it to the Dynamic Island with a new animation that replaces the traditional glowing screen edge that previously appeared when the assistant was triggered. A standout new feature called "Write with Siri" will help users compose text directly within Mail and Messages. The assistant can adapt its tone and style to match how a user typically communicates with a specific person, so drafting an email to a manager might produce something short and direct, while messaging a friend could yield something more casual. Users can access Siri by typing via a swipe-down from the Dynamic Island, by saying "Hey Siri," or by pressing the side button, and the assistant can now handle more complex requests by pulling information from emails, calendars, contacts, and the web. Apple is also rolling out a brand-new voice experience with customizable pace and expressivity, plus a system-wide dictation upgrade that the company claims delivers significantly better accuracy across spelling, punctuation, and capitalization. Together, these changes position Siri AI as Apple's most substantial assistant overhaul since the feature debuted, though the company now faces the challenge of convincing users that the revamped experience is worth a two-year wait.
