Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei published a lengthy open letter calling for the AI industry to "pace the frontier" and slow development, a proposal that gained public support from OpenAI's Sam Altman and Elon Musk on X, as well as tentative backing from Alphabet's Demis Hassabis.
Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson, however, believe the AI executives are overreacting. According to the Financial Times, Trump stated, "We're leading China in AI... and, frankly, I want to keep it that way, because whoever wins AI, wins," expressing concern that a pause could allow China to surpass the US.
Johnson echoed those sentiments on CNN, telling Jake Tapper that rushing to impose restrictions on AI development could be a "national security threat." He warned against panicking, saying, "If Congress just races in and does some sort of emergency session to try and regulate AI, we will lose the race to China."
