Google announced major leadership changes at DeepMind, with Demis Hassabis stepping away from day-to-day operations to focus on AGI and long-term research. Koray Kavukcuoglu, DeepMind's current CTO, will assume leadership of DeepMind. Jeff Dean, Google's 30th employee and a 27-year veteran, is leaving alongside three top Google AI researchers to form a new AI startup.
Internal tensions reportedly fueled the shakeup, including Hassabis' preference for longer-term research over faster product shipping. A current Google employee, speaking anonymously, described Dean's departure as "the vestiges of Google's idealism" dying, saying, "Losing Jeff continues the brain drain at Google. Mediocrity is the likely result."
Despite being viewed as the most successful established tech giant in AI, Google is perceived as slower-moving than OpenAI and Anthropic. CEO Sundar Pichai stated, "We have to continue to move fast and with clear purpose here," while acknowledging areas needing improvement.
