OpenAI has introduced personal finance capabilities to ChatGPT, with the new tools now available in preview for Pro subscribers in the United States as of Friday. The feature allows users to link their financial accounts and receive assistance with spending analysis, subscription tracking, and long-term financial planning. The company partnered with Plaid, a widely-used financial connection service, to handle the account linking process, giving users access to over 12,000 financial institutions including major players like Schwab, Fidelity, Chase, Robinhood, American Express, and Capital One. Once connected, users can view a dashboard displaying their portfolio performance, spending habits, active subscriptions, and upcoming payments.

The launch comes approximately one month after OpenAI acquired the team behind personal finance startup Hiro in April. Hiro had received backing from venture capital firms Ribbit, General Catalyst, and Restive. OpenAI stated that the Hiro team's expertise in finance played a role in bringing this product to market, though the company did not confirm whether the entire feature was developed by the newly acquired team.

Users can access the finance tools by selecting "Get started" within the "Finances" option in the sidebar or by typing "@Finances, connect my accounts" in any ChatGPT conversation. The chatbot then walks users through linking their accounts via Plaid. OpenAI highlighted that more than 200 million users already pose financial questions to ChatGPT monthly, and the company specifically worked with finance experts to develop benchmarks that improved the GPT-5.5 model's ability to handle personal finance queries with better contextual reasoning. The company plans to add Intuit support in the future, which would enable features like analyzing the tax implications of stock sales or predicting credit card approval likelihood.

Users maintain control over their connected accounts through Settings > Apps > Finances, where they can remove connections to specific institutions. OpenAI noted that when a service is disconnected, all synced data will be purged from ChatGPT within 30 days. Users can also view and delete financial memories directly from the Finances page, addressing potential privacy concerns around storing sensitive financial information within the AI platform.
