AMD announced it will invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic as part of a new partnership aimed at expanding the AI company's computing power. Under the agreement, Anthropic will deploy up to 2 gigawatts of AMD's Instinct MI450 AI GPUs using AMD's new Helios rack-scale system.
The companies plan to deploy the first gigawatt in the first half of 2027. This builds upon Anthropic's recent data center deals with SpaceX and TeraWulf, as well as existing infrastructure agreements with Google, Broadcom, and Amazon, with rumors suggesting a potential deal with Meta.
AMD and Anthropic will also launch a multi-year engineering collaboration, where AMD will use Anthropic's Claude AI across its software development, engineering, and product development. Tom Brown, Anthropic cofounder and chief compute officer, said the partnership secures needed capacity while optimizing it for training and serving Claude.
